Price Canyon Ranch

Ranch Description:
Price Canyon Ranch
Location(s): Apache, Arizona
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this letter… Price Canyon Ranch will not be able to continue on in the guest business due to the Horseshoe II Fire that began on May 8th. It is now a month later and this wild fire continues to burn. It has destroyed much of the land and over 148,000 acres of the Coronado National Forest. Through it all, we have had wonderful support from the Forest Service, as well as the 1000 fire fighters from all over Arizona and New Mexico, as they have been working around the clock to contain it. A back burn was lit at the base of the mountains surrounding the ranch to protect the dwellings, however, in doing so it has decimated the trails (leading to many of our favorite rides) to most all of the upper elevations. It was not until this past weekend that we were allowed up to determine what kind of damage it created. We do believe that fire itself is not a bad thing, as it is needed to replenish the forest and will do so eventually as the rains come and the charred earth acts as a mulch to help the grass grow and come again tenfold. Which will hopefully make for some fat and happy cows. However, the results of this fire have been a nightmare of the worst kind! In good conscience and in fairness to our guests, we feel that the riding experience will not be what it has been in the past for quite some time to come…

For the past six and half years we have done everything possible to make Price Canyon a destination that will create memories for our guests and keep them coming back year after year. It has been a labor of love to the say the very least and through it all we have enjoyed sharing this little slice of heaven with people from all over the world. The friendships that have formed because of it are irreplaceable. We will be more than happy to recommend other ranches in the area to fulfill the scheduled and long dreamed of holidays. You might start by checking with the Dude Ranchers Association in Cody, Wyoming at www.duderanch.org and also the Arizona Dude Ranchers Association at www.azdra.com. The association is filled with many wonderful ranches who believe in what they are doing and enjoy sharing it with everyone that comes their way, just as we have.

Price Canyon Ranch has hosted several film productions, such as the Italian Reality Show "The Wild West", a Welch production called the "Magnificent Seven" (just awarded by the European Bafta Television Awards for Best Light Entertainment for 2009), the PBS production of Geronimo, a segment of the American Experience aired on May 4, 2009 and most recently Price Canyon was voted Official Best Guest Ranch in Arizona for 2009. The setting of this incredible slice of heaven, is in a box canyon at a mile high (5450 feet above sea level), tucked in among the beautiful Chiricahua Mountains that reach over 9000 feet,in the midst of Coronado National Forest, in the southeast corner of Arizona. Rich in Indian history, Price Canyon was the home of the infamous Geronimo, who drank from the Price Canyon Spring that feeds the ranch and hid in the canyon for many months before surrendering. Temperatures are always 10-20 degrees cooler than Tucson and Phoenix and because of the altitude, the evening temperatures drop 30-40 degrees year around. The ranch has a wonderful string of 75 horses that can handle all types of riders and so no need to bring your own. Nose to tail riding is always discouraged unless the terrain dictates it. Trails are endless and no ride is ever the same! Our guest enjoy 4-6 hours in the saddle everyday, except Sunday, when we have only the morning ride, to give the cowboys and the horses a much needed break. With three different topographies, the riding includes grassy meadows, perfect for loping and horseplay, to oak forest and old growth pine, all the way up at over 9000 feet. The vistas reach all the way to Old Mexico and the mountains of New Mexico. With only ten luxurious private guest suites, we are able to cater to the needs of every guest who instantly feels at home and part of our Price Canyon family. There is a hot tub and unheated swimming pool to enjoy. Guests can also enjoy a horse-drawn hay wagon ride to cookouts in the forest, horseshoe contests, billiards and rodeo games, such as barrel racing, team penning, cattle sorting, roping, etc. Hiking is unsupervised. For the budding astronomer, Price Canyon is the home of one of the darkest places in the United States. The night time sky is amazing! Price Canyon Ranch is an operating cattle ranch without any supervised children's programs, so the age limit for children is 12 and they must be supervised by an adult at all times. Adult only, Women's Retreats, corporate team building events, honeymoon packages, campouts are all available and can be part of the experience. The ranch does not have a liqour license and so our guests are welcome to bring their own. Each room has its own refrigerator and ice is always available. The peacefulness of this unique setting renews energy and the spirit of all who visit! Please call 800-727-0065 for more information or check out our website at www.pricecanyon.com.
