Bar Lazy J is nestled in a peaceful valley along the banks of the Colorado River. Opened in 1912, Bar Lazy J is considered the oldest continuously operating guest ranch in the state. The ranch has a fascinating history and you will enjoy stepping into the past. While the original lodge and cabins have been modernized, the look and charm of the”old west” still remains. We are proud that Bar Lazy J was one of the three Colorado guest ranches recently featured in the book “Old-Time Dude Ranches Out West” by Elizabeth Clair Flood. We can accommodate 38 guests in cozy, comfortable log cabins. Each cabin can sleep from 2-8 and all have screened porches with a view of the Colorado River. Relaxation is what we offer at Bar Lazy J. The pace is slower.. or not at all. The choice is yours to participate in.

As we all know, life can be hectic these days. What Bar Lazy J offers is a chance to escape to a simpler way of life. To be with family…or alone. To ride the mountain trails, fish the Colorado River or just plain relax. The choice is yours.
Bar Lazy J’s 3/4 mile of Colorado River (designated “Gold Medal Fishing”) offers some of the best Rainbow and German Brown trout fishing in the state. A free fishing clinic is offered weekly and we also have a stocked trout pond.
Our horseback riding takes you through sage covered hills, river crossings and majestic mountains with its sapphire skies and crystal-clear views. Twice a day we offer Scenic, Moderate and Adventure rides on numerous trails covering a variety of mountain terrain. We also offer breakfast and all day rides. Optional cattle drives and team penning is available. We carefully consider prior experience and ability before pairing you with one of our 90+ horses. Personalized riding instruction is always available.
Our children’s counselors and children’s wranglers lead the children through games, crafts, horseback riding, swimming and hiking. Range Riders (ages 7-12) are assigned a horse for the week and trail ride every day. Lil’ Buckaroos (ages 3-6) are lead on horseback on the ranch grounds.
Other ranch activities include jeep rides, sight seeing van trips, mountain biking, guided hiking, white water rafting, and planned nightly activities.
We can accommodate 42 guests in 12 cozy, comfortable cabins plus the RANCH HOUSE. All cabins have screened porches with most having views overlooking the Colorado River.
For most meals everyone gathers in the historic lodge where we serve good ol’ American Home Style food. At 7500 ft. elevation the mountain air and outdoor life provide a terrific appetite booster – so we serve em’ up in cowboy sized portions. Our entrees are accompanied with delights such as homemade bread, pastries and desserts. Since our own family is split between meat and non-meat eaters, we recognize and appreciate guests’ variance in appetites.
The owners and staff at Bar Lazy J are committed to providing their guests a western adventure vacation in a warm, friendly and family atmosphere where guest needs come first, and guests depart feeling they had their best vacation ever.
